There is something wonderfully metaphorical in the image of a herd of 30 Santa Clauses chasing a contemporary Scrooge through the busy streets of snowy Chicago. The holiday season, whether we will or no, will force itself upon even those least willing to acknowledge it, much less celebrate it.

The Scrooge in question has even less reason than most to view the approach of tinsel, holly, and ho ho ho with joy. Centuries of reasons, as it turns out. He’s Fred Claus (Vince Vaughn) and for all that time he has lived in the shadow of his famous, more popular brother, Santa (Paul Giamatti).

It all started the day Santa, or rather Nicholas, was born. Aside from being a jumbo newborn, he was also peculiar insofar as he didn’t cry, but rather smiled and chortled “Ho”. Fred wanted to love his brother, but he was just a regular kid while Nick, well, he was a saint. When the sainthood became official, the entire family, spouses included, stopped aging, even Fred, who escaped his mother (cheerfully debilitating Kathy Bates) constantly comparing him to his brother by nothing to do with his sibling or parents. The 21st century finds Fred spending the holiday season repossessing televisions, planning his own business venture into off-track betting, dispensing iffy advice to the sassy ragamuffin who lives upstairs, and trying to worm his way back into the good graces of his girlfriend, Wanda (Rachel Weisz), who has had it with his unreliability and fear of commitment. One thing, including a stint in the county jail, leads to another and Fred finds himself needing a monetary favor from brother Nick, who agrees, but only if Fred will finally visit the North Pole and help with business of getting presents ready for Christmas.

FRED CLAUS could have been a glib and obvious movie, and in many ways it is the latter, but instead of being mindless peppermint-coated drivel, it goes for the heartstrings without pouring on the sugar. Santa has a few issues of his own, including a tart wife (Miranda Richardson), whose sartorial taste runs retro and whose philosophical ones run towards the tough-love side of the spectrum, and Clyde Northcutt (Kevin Spacey), an efficiency expert out to shut the whole North Pole operation down and outsource it to Antarctica. All it will take is three marks in his little notebook, and Christmas as we all know it is history. With a month to go until Christmas, the first mark is struck within an hour of Northcutt’s arrival when Fred turns the elves onto rock-and-roll instead of the usual holiday carols, creating chaos in the factory.

The topic is Christmas, but the theme is family, and two brothers who are more alike than they are different. Giamatti is mild, with sad basset-hound eyes and a gentleness in manner that is echoed in the soft underbelly Vaughn gives Fred, who spouts a hard-line, but whose heart is still tender enough to be hurt by being outshone by Nicholas at every turn. The gags are sweet on wry rather than hilarious, though a Siblings Anonymous session Fred attends comes dangerously close to being a little to pointed for this fable. Not that this is a milquetoast story. Spacey’s slick evil is as deep and dark as a black hole, and the violence that ensues when the workshop DJ (Ludacris) refuses to play anything other than “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” is just short of alarming. The same can be said for the low-cut costume worn by Charlene (Elizabeth Banks), Santa’s micro-mini-skirted adult-sized helper who is a whiz with numbers, but fails to notice Willie (John Michael Higgins), the elf who adores her with anything but a hidden passion. The hemline makes one wonder what the view is like for the elves in Santa’s Village.

Aside from that, the look of the film has the right Currier and Ives charm. The North Pole is all gingerbread with all the fixings and Christmas lights that glow cheerily, with a giant snow globe at the heart of the toy factory that lets Santa keep an eye on all the kids in the world, and Fred on Wanda while he is away. The cast is great, neither too saccharine nor too arch, with special effects shrinking Ludacris and Higgins seamlessly down to elfin stature, even as they are a little rough around the edges when it comes to making reindeer fly.

Of course there are the breakthroughs in everyone’s relationships. Of course Christmas is in danger of being cancelled and, of course, it’s up to Fred to save the holiday after hundreds of years of resenting it. FRED CLAUS is from the ‘of course’ school of formulaic filmmaking, but it makes a good job of a tough sell, leaving the audience anticipating the sugar cookies, tinsel, and carols that, after all, they can’t do anything to prevent from taking over their lives from September right through December 25.

Think Christmas and you think a whole lot of cooking, eating and drinking. Traditions vary from country to country, but the common thread is that food prepared during this period must be “special”, above and beyond the prosaic and every day.

Creating a beautiful and appealing table scape is an integral part to any party and should not be overlooked when you are planning the logistics of your event. Often times if one is not throwing a dinner where it is obviously a major player, the table can be left forgotten and sadly unadorned. By following a few helpful hints you can assemble a terrific table setting.

The first and most important hint, is to get creative. Use your imagination and artistic abilities. See your table as a blank canvas and yourself as the artist who shell paint a masterpiece.

I remember one Christmas my sister was hoping for some new watch as a gift from my parents. She was so disappointed to find an exercise bike under the tree with her name on it. Needless to say, the bike didn't get used much.

During the holidays, a time of such crass consumerism, it's especially important to step back and be grateful for what you have, and consider whether your values match up with your actions.
One way to address this is by donating to organizations that address issues that matter to you.In addition to donating time and money directly, giving charitable donations in another person's name is a fantastic gift option. So often, people give and receive gifts they don't really want or need. Gift-giving becomes a chore, and people end up with a lot of stuff they don't even know what to do with. But by making a donation to a charity that you and the recipient support, you can be sure that people will be grateful. You'll both feel good about helping others and they'll admire you for your generosity and thoughtfulness.Your best bet is finding out what organizations the other person already supports, and contacting the group about making a donation in your friend's name.

Keeping The Peace During Holiday Meals

A New York Times article titled "Pass a Drumstick and an Olive Branch" had some great tips for making your holiday gathering as enjoyable and peaceful as possible.Here's a quick summary of the do's and don'ts recommended in the article, along with a few tips of my own.

Do:

Bring something for the host.
Call in advance to ask what kind of food you could bring, but a small gift or bottle of wine is acceptable too.
Offer to help the hostess with anything she needs. If you're the host/hostess, give people tasks to make them feel needed and to give anyone who looks bored something to do.
If someone says something offensive during the dinner conversation, acknowledge the comment and change the subject.
If someone frequently makes rude or offensive comments, it might be worth speaking to them before the big day. If you're not comfortable doing that (or feel that it this will only egg the person on), just be prepared to defend anyone who is personally attacked.
If you're the host/hostess, make it clear when people have to stay at the table by asking everyone to stay until the meal is over.
If there are younger children, let them go and watch a movie or play games between dinner and dessert, but often if you let people wander between courses, it's hard to round everyone back up.
Pretend to enjoy yourself. Someone (presumably) worked hard to cook and clean and host a meal for multiple people, so show respect for your hosts by making the best of the situation.
Try to eat what you can if the food is bad or it's not compatible with your eating restrictions (except for those recommended by a doctor). Of course, it's up to you to let the hostess know in advance what you can and cannot eat, so she can plan accordingly.
If someone brings up political or religious viewpoints that are offensive to you, try as hard as possible to avoid fighting. If the person won't drop the topic, excuse yourself to get more food, another drink or to go to the bathroom.
Let yourself calm down, and hopefully in a few minutes by the time you return, the conversation will have moved on.
Thank the hosts profusely before you leave. Write a thank you note or call to thank them within a couple of days.

Don't:

Act sullen.
Pick fights (or allow them to continue).
Complain. Save it for the ride home!
Leave the table before the host says you can.
Drink too much.
Do anything that will make the situation less comfortable for other people or show disrespect for the hostess.

Final word:

Do what you can to make the event run as smoothly as possible for everyone, even if you're having a terrible time. And if you're hosting, don't beat yourself up if people don't get along. What are the holidays without dysfunctional family dinners? Everyone will laugh about it later.

Each year we all spend so much time trying to find the perfect gift for our loved ones. If you have younger visitor coming to stay or you would like to do something different with your kids this year, ice skating is the perfect adventure. We in Dubai may not have New York’s Rockefeller skating rink, but we do have the ice skating rink at the Galleria which is situated in Deira, adjacent to the Hayat Regency Hotel.
To use the rink, which cost AED 25 for both adults and children per person, including skate hire, is an absolute bargain. If you bring along your own ice skates it cost just AED 15. Should you wish look like a professional on the ice then enroll now for some lessons before your visitor arrive.
A 30-minute lesson cost AED 100, or a package of five, 30 minutes lessons cost AED 400. Lessons need to be pre-booked.

No where in Dubai is more festive than the Medinat Theatre at Souq Medinat Jumeirah. Each year the theatre is decked out with spectacular Christmas decorations and plays host to many Christmas shows. Last year some friends flew from their home in Saudi to spend the weekend in Dubai only because the Nutcracker was performed at Medinat Theatre. This year the performances of The Nutcracker and Giselle were earlier in the beginning of December.
This Christmas Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs is being performed between December 23rd -30th. Tickets are priced at AED 135 for adults and AED 95 for children. I am sure that despite all the Christmas offers from the hotels and shopping malls of Dubai, still many people will prefer to remain home with their family, or visit relatives and friends during the festive celebrations for Christmas and New Year.

This decision is not the simplest or easiest one as it means lots of domestic tasks - mostly cooking and cleaning.

Imagine how wonderful it would be simply to wave a magic wand and find that all your Christmas cooking is planned and in some case even, cooked and frozen, well before the guests arrive!

Delia (the most famous UK Chef) at Delia Online has devised a series of lunch and dinner menus from Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve ( click here to see it all). You can choose to follow them, or can dip in and out of them, depending on what you're doing. For each day, she has written a timed plan, step by step, so that every think will be ready at the same time. From easy mince pies to roast goose with pork, sage and pear stuffing with confiture of pears, ham croquette, spiced fig pudding ( for those who prefer a lighter version) and gluten-free puddings and cakes.
